New Delhi: The Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which was passed in the Lok Sabha in August, was approved in the Rajya Sabha today.
The Bill seeks to amend the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Act, 1951. It seeks to remove the Congress President as a permanent member of a trust that runs the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial.
The Bill allows the Central government to terminate the term of a nominated trustee before the expiry of the period of his term, without assigning any reason.
The Bill also mentions that in case there is no Leader of Opposition in the Lower House, the Leader of the single largest Opposition Party will be made the trustee.
Meanwhile, Congress has strongly opposed the Bill stating that that people will not appreciate it if the government brings this Bill and asked to show some magnanimity.
The party demanded that the government take back this resolution.
Currently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chairs the trust. Apart from the Prime Minister, Congress President, the Union Culture Minister, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and the Chief Minister and Governor of Punjab are on the board.
