Presidential Election: BJD MPs Cast Their Votes in Favour of Droupadi Murmu

New Delhi: As instructed by party supremo Naveen Patnaik, all BJD MPs extended their full support to NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu in the Presidential election held on Monday.

All BJD MPs from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, assembled at BJD Parliamentary Party Office, Parliament House at 12pm today and thereafter proceeded together and casted their votes in favour of “Odisha’s Daughter” President Candidate Droupadi Murmu, according to a statement.

Earlier, BJD President Naveen Patnaik asked his party MPs to extend full support to NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.

“The daughter of Odisha Droupadi Murmu has been nominated to the highest office of our country. It is indeed a matter of honour and pride for our state. On behalf of the people of Odisha and BJD, we need to extend our full support to her candidature in the presidential election to be held on July 18,” Naveen told the party MPs.
Voting for electing the new President of India began on Monday in Parliament.

Murmu is the NDA candidate, who is contesting against Yashwant Sinha, supported by the Opposition parties.

The Rajya Sabha’s Secretary General is the Returning Officer for this election.

The President is elected by members of the Electoral College consisting of elected Members of Parliament and that of all the state Assemblies, including National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The nominated Members of Parliament, state Assemblies and Members of Legislative Council are not eligible to vote.

A total of 776 Members of Parliament and 4,033 MLAs will vote in the Presidential elections.

The total value of votes is 10,86,431, of which votes of MLAs are 5,43,231 and MPs are 5,43,200.
