Priti Patel Named UK’s First Indian-Origin Home Secretary

London: Indian origin Priti Patel, who had been a prominent member of the ‘Back Boris’ campaign for the Conservative Party leadership, was named as home secretary by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Priti Patel, an ardent Brexiteer who was among the most vocal critics of Theresa May’s Brexit strategy, takes over the new role from Sajid Javid, who was appointed chancellor by the new prime minister.

She took charge as Britain’s first Indian-origin Home Secretary in the newly-unveiled Boris Johnson Cabinet on Wednesday.

Patel, a former international development secretary has played a leading role in Boris Johnson’s leadership campaign.

She was previously International Development Secretary from 2016 to 2017.
