Strengthening Grassroots Stakeholders: SDA Representatives Get Fire Safety Orientation in BMC

Bhubaneswar: Strengthening grassroots stakeholders has become the typical approach of approach of the city authority. Two different capacity building programmes organised here to provide implementation approach on fire safety and waste management.

As part of programme on Fire safety orientation to different stakeholders today’s programme was organised at Chandrasekhar Pur Kalyan Mandap coming under north administrative zone of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). A strategic coverage of the programme oriented slum based leaders of the zone.

Knowledge on fire safety can never be limited to colonies, gated communities and apartment/organisations only. It is important to orient the citizens residing in slum pockets. Because they are the city makers; says Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange.

In the inclusive perspective different segments need to be covered. The fire safety for slum area can be save their life with regards to kid’s fire safety, kitchen safety, handling LPG, residential safety and safety measures at workplace.

An important aspect of providing orientation is a sizable no. of women from slum areas are in cooking and domestic profession. They need to be oriented on safety measures. The city authority therefore arranged the orientation for the office bearers of Slum Dwellers Association (SDA) for north zone of the city administration told Dy. Commissioner Emergency Ramesh Ch. Jena.

Prasanta Kumar Mohapatra, Assistant Fire Officer cum Trainer, Odisha Fire Disaster Response Academy (OFDRA) Bhubaneswar informed the chemistry of fire and how to extinguish the fire by traditional method available at home. He elaborated the classes of fire and different type of fire extinguisher used for fire incidents. He also told how to respond the fire initiation in house by calling the toll-free no 112 for fire emergency.

Satyabrata Padhi, Capacity Building Coordinator from OSDMA summarized the benefit of Community action and Capacity Building for Fire Safety. He informed the participant that Disaster Management is a Coordinated and Collective effort. So Capacity of the Community must be enhanced to prepare the fire safety framework and Plan for Bhubaneswar City. He also emphasized the role of OSDMA in Disaster Management and several of activities are taken up by OSDMA to make Odisha as resilient community.

Counterparts of other two zones will undergo the training programme in next two days. South West Zone will host the programme on 2nd Nov. 2022 and South East on 3rd Nov. 2022 at unit VIII Community centre and Bada Gada Kalyana Mandap respectively.
