New Delhi: Senior BJP leader and former foreign minister Sushma Swaraj passed away at AIIMS here on Tuesday. She was 67.
The veteran BJP leader had been admitted to AIIMS after suffering a heart attack this evening.
Swaraj, who was an influential minister during Modi government’s first term, had not contested 2019 Lok Sabha elections due to health reasons.
Swaraj had served as the Minister of External Affairs of India from 26 May 2014 to 30 May 2019, the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi.
She had been elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
She had also served as Chief Minister of Delhi from 13 October 1998 to 3 December 1998.
In November last year, Swaraj had announced that she would not contest the 2019 general election citing health reasons. She had undergone kidney transplant in December 2016.
