Ganjam: House Owner Sets Example for Others, Waives Off Rent for 12 Tenants

Berhampur: Moved by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s appeal to be compassionate to tenants due to the hardship caused by COVID-19 lockdown, a house owner in Ganjam district set example for others by waiving off rents for his tenants.

Murli Mohan Acharya, a house owner in Somnath Nagar in Berhampur city, waived off one month’s rent for his 12 tenants who are small scale business owners and street-food vendors.

Not only this, Acharya also supported the tenants by providing 25 kg rice to each of them.

The Ganjam administration has lauded the good work of the house owner amid the corona pandemic situation in the district.

Berhampur Sub-Collector Shinde Dattatreya Bhausaheb felicitated Acharya and urged others to help the needy at this crisis moment.
Even one per cent of the house owners will do such good works, we can really bring a great change in our society, the Sub-Collector said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had appealed the house owners to waive off or at least defer the rent by 3 months in view of the lockdown due to the deadly COVID-19.

“It is time for everyone to be there for each other as the entire country is under lockdown and fighting an unprecedented pandemic of COVID-19. Appeal to house owners to be compassionate to poor & waive off or at least defer the rent by 3 months. Let’s show the world that Odisha cares,” the CM said.

The CM also said tenants should not be asked to vacate for non-payment of rents during this crisis period.

“The world is facing an unprecedented crisis with COVID-19. The country as a whole is under lockdown and we as a state are leaving no stone unturned in fighting this humanitarian challenge. Let each one of us rise up and be there for each other during these hard times,” said Naveen Patnaik.
