Hirakud Dam Water Level Rises, First Flood Water to Be Released on Aug 14

Sambalpur: The water level of the Hirakud Dam reservoir has been rising due to incessant rains in the upper catchment area of river Mahanadi.

The authorities have decided to release first flood water from the dam on August 14, reports stated.

The first flood water of the year will be dischared from the dam at 11.00 am on August 14, said Hirakud Dam Chief Engineer Sunil Nayak.

The water level reached 607.97 ft by 9.00 am on Friday at the Hirakud dam.

As per the sources, the water level of the reservoir stands at 610.39 ft against water storage capacity of 630 ft. Over 1.43 lakh cusec water is entering into the dam and water outflow is 16,929 cusec.

In view of water inflow rise in the dam, 611.45 ft water is expected by today, an official source said.

The upper stream of the Mahanadi had recorded 86.37 mm of rainfall while 65.75 mm rainfall was registered in the lower catchment area on Friday.
