Sharjah: Defending champions Mumbai Indians inflicted a 10-wicket defeat on their arch rivals Chennai Super Kings on Friday in the 41st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to field first. Batting first, CSK replaced Shane Watson and Kedar Jadhav with Ruturaj Gaekwad and N Jagadeesan. For the first time in IPL 2020, CSK lost 5 batsmen in powerplay, scoring just 24 runs off the first six overs. Jasprit Bumrah (2/25) and Trent Boult (4/18) shared 6 wickets among themselves to destroy the CSK top order. Rahul Chahar then joined the party and removed MS Dhoni (16 off 16 balls) and then Deepak Chahar (0) in quick successions. Sam Curran (52 off 47 balls) was the top-scorer whose fifty guided Chennai Super Kings to 114/9 against Mumbai Indians.
In reply, MI openers Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan came out all guns blazing. With no scoreboard pressure, MI promoted Kishan up the order to gain more confidence as the playoffs is nearing. An unbeaten 116-run opening wicket stands between Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan guided MI to a massive 10-wicket win against CSK. Chasing 115-runs target, Ishan Kishan scored the second half-century of the season, scoring 68* off 37 balls. Quinton de Kock remained unbeaten on 46 off 37 balls.
It was MI’s first 10-wicket victory over Chennai and the first time MS Dhoni’s CSK have lost by such a margin. MI went to the top of the IPL standings while three-time champions CSK went to the bottom of the eight-team race.
