Kendrapada: SHG Members Turns Waste Warriors

Kendrapada: Smrutirekha Das, a local SHG member, into his late twenty is riding battery operated vehicle with all smile and pride in her face, collecting waste from door to door in Kendrapada town.

In order to bring in efficiency in waste collection and better management of various types of waste, the Kendrapada administration has introduced running of battery operated garbage collection vehicle that will collect waste from home to home. Initially, this has been introduced in two wards of Kendrapada Municipality area.

The vehicle is being driven by a SHG member of Renubala SHG. The administration is in the process of procuring another three battery operated vehicles. Very this method of garbage collection will be adopted in other wards also.

By taking into account the pilot project that is being going in the two wards, it will be expanded to all 21 wards within one month.

Speaking exclusively to thenewsroom.co.in, Kendrapara collector, Samartha Verma said, “We have already made quotation on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) portal for another 3 vehicles and very soon we will adopt this method in other wards as well.”

Another important aspect of this is source segregation of various types of garbage. The garbage collectors will segregate various types of waste material and place in the specified containers.

These SHG members have been imparted all the required train of solid waste management before being given responsibilities of collecting garbage. Safety methods to be adopted are one of the areas which are important and we have given training to these SHG members while collecting garbage said an official.
