Madras High Court Pulls Up ECI For Second Wave of Covid-19

Chennai: In what could be the biggest setback to the Election Commission of India, the Madras High Court today said that the ECI is solely responsible for the second wave of Covid-19 in the country. It also went to the extent of saying that the Election Commission officials should be booked for murder. Coming heavily for its inaction in maintaining Covid protocols, the HC said “Were you on another planet when political rallies were being held?”.

Chief Justice of Madras High Court Sanjib Banerjee reprimanded the ECI for failing to ensure COVID-19 guidelines in election rallies and said it is singularly responsible for the second wave of COVID-19. It also said that the Election Commission officers should be booked on murder charges probably for allowing political rallies during the pandemic. “The situation now is of survival and protection. Everything else comes next,” the Chief Justice said.

It also directed the Election Commission to hold consultations with the State Health Secretary and place on record the planning to enforce COVID-19 protocol for counting of votes by April 30.
