Man Allegedly Pronounces Triple Talaq Over Phone; Booked

Kendrapara: In a shocking incident, a man from Kendrapada’s Pattamundai town, working in Hyderabad, has pronounced Talaq to his wife over phone. This comes just within days of the Indian Parliament passing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 criminalizing triple talaq.

The matter came to light after the estranged wife Rubina Khatun lodged a formal complaint with the Pattamundai police. She has alleged that her husband Abu Sufiyan Khan pronounced triple talaq over the phone.

The couple had a formal Nikah two years back after seven years of courtship. Abu had taken his wife with him to Hyderabad. But after six months, when Rubina was pregnant, he left her at his home town in Odisha. According to the complaint filed with police, her in-laws were torturing her for dowry. When the tortures became unbearable, she went to her parents’ home where she delivered her child. But instead of taking her back to his house, the accused husband pronounced Triple Talaq over phone from Hyderabad.

According to Rubina, she went through mental and physical harassment by her in-laws and when she demanded her husband to take her to Hyderabad with him, he instead gave her Talaq. She also said that her parents had given him one Lakh rupees as dowry and gold ornaments along with household article.
