Bhubaneswar: A silent revolution is taking place in rural Odisha with the participation of women from the SHGs in the development process which not only accelerates the growth but improves their quality of life as well.
Mission Shakti in Odisha proves to be the biggest movement to eradicate poverty and for the empowerment of women in the State. Many Women Self Helf Groups under the banner ‘Mission Shakti’, have redefined the entrepreneurship in the rural Odisha by venturing into new economic and business activities.
Maa Mangala SHG in Rangeilunda Block in Gnjam district is one such SHG which has ventured into into LPG distribution as retail agents and official service providers in the Block.
Achieving a landmark success, the SHG has distributed LPG cooking gas to as many as 4000 consumers in 11 GPs under Rangeilunda block since 2005.
Even during the pandemic, the agency continues to provide services in the rural areas seamlessly. The turn over in the currant year has crossed 50 lakhs.
On daily rotation basis the members of the SHG with 3 staff members monitor smooth distribution of LPG to the customers. They have continued to distribute cooking gas to their customers during the lockdown. This year the turnover of this SHG from LPG dealership is more than 50lakh.
Poor people, mostly women, are repositioning themselves to secure their livelihood by venturing into many business activities under Mission Shakti in the State.
With bank credit flowing into the sector, women SHGs have expanded their economic activities. They run cooking gas agencies of IOC and BPCL, besides kerosene dealerships of the state public distribution system.
