Khurda : Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has called for recognizing the Paika Rebellion of Odisha as the first freedom Struggle in India. Speaking on the occasion of the foundation stone laying of the Paika Rebellion Memorial at the Barunei Hills, Naveen said Paika Rebellion of Odisha was a mass movement against British oppression. He also remembered the sacrifices made by Baxi Jagabandhu and others during the rebellion.
He said that the people of Odisha have the greatest self respect and strength. Because of the Paikas, the Odisha Empire flourished from the Ganges to the Godavari. The Paikas of Odisha had for the first time rebelled against the British occupation in the year 1817. Naveen also demanded that a special train be introduced in the Name of Baxi Jagabandhu from Odisha.
President Ramnath Kobind, who is on a two day visit to Odisha, today laid the foundation for the Paika Rebellion Memorial here at the Picturesque Barunei Hills being set up by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture with the help of the Government of Odisha.
Speaking on the occasion, President Kovind said that “The memorial will be a source of inspiration for youths and generations to come.”
The program was attended by Governor of Odisha Prof Ganeshi Lal, Governor of Andhra Pradesh Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, Union Petrolium Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other dignitaries.
