Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today remembered former President of India and Bharat Ratna Varahagiri Venkata Giri on his birth anniversary.

“Remembering former President of India and Bharat Ratna VV Giri on his birth anniversary. He was a dedicated freedom fighter, able statesman, a great parliamentarian and a staunch supporter of labour rights”, the Odisha CM tweeted.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri, more popularly known as V.V. Giri, was the fourth president of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974. He was the only president to be elected as an independent candidate. He was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as president in 1974.

On 10 August 1894, Giri was born to a Telugu-speaking family in Berhampur, Odisha. His father V.V. Jogayapantulu, was a prominent lawyer, while mother Subhadramma actively participated in the freedom movement. This enabled Giri to get accustomed with politics at a very young age.
