Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has decided to institute an annual award in the name of ‘Suraj’ to motivate organ donation, the initiative deeply moved by the inspiring and exemplary humanitarian act of parents of late Suraj Behera of Ganjam district.
The parents of Suraj Behera hit headlines across the nation when they pledged to donate six vital organs (both Kidneys, Liver, Heart and both Eyes) of their brain dead son, saving precious lives of others who were in need.
Highly appreciating the family for their inspiring and exemplary humanitarian act, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that an Annual award will be instituted in the name of ‘Suraj’ to felicitate organ donors from the state and institutions that motivate organ donation.
The State Government will also provide an award of Rs.5 lakh as recognition from CMRF for their inspiring humane act which will motivate people in the state.
Besides, the government will provide homestead land and Bju Pucca Ghar to the family that hails from Bhanjanagar block in Ganjam district.
Suraj Behera, a 22-year old youth of Ganjam district, who was declared brain dead, became a saviour of six persons suffering from end-stage organ failure after his family decided to donate his organs.
Suraj was seriously injured in a road accident on 29 October at Surat in Gujarat, where he was working as a supervisor in a privately-run company.
His battle for life ended five days later when the doctors declared him brain dead on 2 November at 8.15 pm.
On the same evening, his heart, liver, kidney, and cornea were harvested and successfully transplanted in six persons.
