Puri Celebrates International Coastal Clean Up Day

The Union Environment Ministry has recommended eight beaches of the country for the coveted Blue Flag certification including the Golden Beach of Puri.

Puri: Standing true to its endeavor towards making Puri one of the best pilgrim cities of the world and to transform the Golden Beach into the best in the country, Puri district administration today observed International Coastal Clean Up Day with much enthusiasm.

On the occasion of International Coastal Clean Up Day, Mo Beach initiative was carried out at 50 places with 10 volunteers each on the coastline of Puri Municipality, Konark NAC and Astaranga, Kakatpur, GOP, Krushnaprasad, Brahamagiri blocks. The initiative aimed at generating awareness on clean beaches.

Sanitation workers, members of voluntary organisations and citizens came together to participate in beach cleanup at Chandrabhaga beach, Konark NAC. Participants formed teams and practiced Social Distancing.

On the eve of International Coastal Clean Up Day, SICOM has launched the Indian version of the Eco label BEAMS by hoisting the MY BEACH Flag at 8 beaches, which are ready and recommended for the Blue flag tag. Since Golden Beach, Puri is one of them, the flag was hoisted there as well. In a tribute to the unsung heroes of cleanliness, Sarojini Pradhan, the senior most sanitary worker, hoisted the flag at the Golden Beach. This was a way to honour sanitary workers who keep the beach clean and beautiful.

Puri’s Golden beach made it a special event this year as the Union Environment Ministry has recommended eight beaches of the country for the coveted Blue Flag certification including the Golden Beach of Puri.

On the eve of International Coastal Clean-Up Day, celebrated in 100 countries since 1986, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday announced that eight Indian beaches have been recommended for the international Blue Flag Certification – given to the world’s cleanest beaches. The eight recommended beaches include Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Daman and Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Golden Beach (Puri) in Odisha, and Radhanagar beach in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
