PV Sindhu Creates History, becomes first Indian to Clinch World Badminton Championships

New Delhi: PV Sindhu, India’s ace badminton player on Sunday scripted history as she became the first Indian shuttler to win a gold medal at the BWF World Championships .

She defeated her Japanese counterpart Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-14 to crete the history in Basel.

The summit clash lasted for 37 minutes, Sindhu dominated the entire encounter and pushed Okuhara on the back-foot from the word go.

  Sindhu dedicated the historic win to her mother, who is celebrating her birthday today.

The 24-year-old Indian shuttler then thanked her coaches Kim Ji Hyun and Pulela Gopichand and the entire support staff for preparing her for the intense battle in Basel. Interestingly, the crowd inside the auditorium in Basel started singing happy birthday when Sindhu revealed that today is her mother’s birthday.

“I am proud of the fans here, thanks for their support. Thanks to my coach Kim [Ji Hyun] and Gopi sir and all the support staff. And I dedicate this award to my mom, it’s her birthday today. Happy birthday, mom,” said Sindhu.
