Bhubaneswar: A team of Airports Authority of India is today visiting Puri in connection with identifying land for the proposed Sri Jagannath International Airport here.
The team members along with District Collector Samarth Verma, Sub-Collector Bhabataran Sahu and other senior officers today visited two probable places at the Marine Drive and Puri-Brahmagiri road. The Marine Drive had a small air strip some decades ago which can also be a suitable place for the proposed Airport.
Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 1st requesting him to ask the Ministry of Civil Aviation to speed up the process of setting up the International Airport at Puri. An International Airport at Puri will help increase in the flow of devotees from across the world.
The state government is developing Puri into a World Heritage City having all modern infrastructure and facilities. Naveen had written in his letter that “The proposed airport will help bring Jagannath devotees from across the world to Puri and will help promote Jagannath culture across the world. Therefore, we propose that an international airport be established at Puri in the name of Sri Jagannath International Airport.”
