New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday entrusted Allahabad High Court to monitor the CBI probe into the gang-rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras.
On the plea of transferring of trial in the case to Delhi, the SC said since CBI is investigating the incident, there should be no apprehension about the mistrial. However, it said the issue will be kept open and would be taken up, if needed, after the completion of a probe into the case.
The order was passed by a SC bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, which had reserved its orders in the case on October 15.
The CBI, which started the probe into the case on October 10, will now report its progress to the HC. The HC will also determine the transfer of the trial and security to witnesses and the victim’s kin.
A 20-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras on September 14. She later died due to her injuries at a hospital in Delhi. The victim was cremated late night allegedly without the family’s approval on September 30 which led to angry protests across the country.
