No Proposal to Open Ratna Bhandar of Sri Jagannath Temple, Says Odisha Law Minister

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Tuesday said that there is no proposal to open the Ratna Bhandar, the treasure trove of the Jagannath temple in Puri.

Informing this in the Assembly, Law Minister Pratap Jena said that the Ratna Bhandar was last opened in July 14, 1985.

The treasure trove had 454 pieces of gold ornaments with precious stones and other articles weighing 12,838 ‘bhari’ and 1.75 ‘annas’. Besides, 236 silver jewellery along with other valuables were found in it, Jena told the House while replying to a query of Congress MLA Suresh Routray.

One bhari is equal to 11.6637 gm.

The Minister assured that the precious jewellery and ornaments, as per the inventory prepared between May 13, 1978, and July 23, 1978, are safe and secured.
