Bhubaneswar: Adding another feather to its cap, Odisha won the India Geospatial Excellence Award for its mega livable habitat mission ‘Jaga’ that ensures land rights to landless urban slum dwellers.
The Odisha Government won the prestigious award along with Tata Trusts at the GeoSmart India 2019 for technological innovation in empowering millions of urban poor by providing land rights through Jaga Mission.
The slum titling project is backed by a landmark ‘Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Act 2017’ that aims to assign land rights to slum dwellers in the Notified Area Council (NAC) and Municipalities, said Geospatial World.
The Act covers 18 lakh people living in 3,000 slums of the state and ensures rights to slum dwellers living in small towns to 600 sq ft of land and to 450 sq ft in cities.
Expressing happiness over the award, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that it further strengthens his government’s resolve to transform urban slums into livable habitats.
