Odisha: Seven More Gates of Hirakud Dam to Be Opened Today

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities have decided to open seven more gates of the reservoir today.

The decision was taken considering the excess inflow into the dam due to incessant rain in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River, sources said.

The authorities will open the gates to release excess water in order to keep reservoir level maintained at 619-620 ft level.

With opening of seven more gates, about 2.2 lakh cusec water is being discharged from the dam through 14 gates.

According to the Water Resources Department, the water level at Hirakud dam touched 620.89 ft by 8.00 am on August 19 against total storage capacity of 630 ft.

It is predicted that the maximum flood flow at Mundali point will be about 4 lakh cusec today.
