US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran, Targets Supreme Leader

Washington: The US has imposed “hard-hitting” new sanctions on access to key financial resources and support on Iran and its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following Tehran’s downing of an unmanned American drone, media reports stated.

US President Donald Trump said that he was signing an executive order for the sanctions amid tensions between the United States and Iran that have grown since May, when Washington ordered all countries to halt imports of Iranian oil, reports added.

Trump said the supreme leader and his associates were ultimately responsible for what the US president called “the hostile conduct of the regime”.

He said the US would “continue to increase pressure on Tehran”, adding that “never can Iran have a nuclear weapon”.
