New Delhi: With the Centre mulling to allow 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in education sector in the country, Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal MP Dr. Sasmit Patra wanted to know whether the Government has made any impact assessment study on it.

Stating that the education is a basic essential service, the BJD MP said that with large educational institutions from abroad with deep pockets would walk into India, it’s bound to impact Indian academic institutions”.

Raising a supplementary question on the issue of 100% FDI in education sector in Rajya Sabha, Patra asked, “Has the Ministry or Government made any specific study to identify what impacts it would have on education system because we have indigenous and small homegrown institutions”.

With large foreign institutions investing in education sector, it’s bound to impact Indian academic institutions, the BJD MP added.

Notably, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech said, “It is felt that our education system needs greater inflow of finance to attract talented teachers, innovate and build better labs.

Therefore steps would be taken to enable sourcing External Commercial Borrowings and FDI so as to able to deliver higher quality education.”
