Water Level Rises in Hirakud; 18 Gates Opened

Sambalpur: Incessant rain in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi has forced the Hirakud Dam Authorities to open another six sluice gates of the dam to release water.  With this, eighteen gates of Hirakud Dam are now open. At 10 am Sunday, the water level in the dam was steady at 625.69 ft while the full reservoir level is 630 feet.

Water discharge at Khairmal stood at 6,62,000 Cusecs and Barmul  stood at 5,76,000 Cusecs. At Munduli the discharge was at 6,97 000 Cusecs and stayed steady. With the MET department issuing more rain warnings, water release from Naraj Barrage and flow in down streams is expected to increase further. Odisha state disaster management authority has also been advised to closely monitor the situation near the delta region.

In south Odisha, at least three persons, including a woman, died after being swept away in rain water in different places of Ganjam district. Heavy rains played havoc in Ganjam, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Sundargarh, Puri, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur since Friday.
