French Open: Iga Swiatek, First Pole Wins Grand Slam Singles Title

Paris: Teenager Iga Swiatek became the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat American fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 in the French Open final on today.

19-year-old Iga Swiatek joined the elite list of players, Chris Evert, Evon Goolagong, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles who have won the French Open before they turned 20.

“I’m so happy. I’m so happy my family was here finally. It was overwhelming for me,” said world number 54 Swiatek, the lowest-ranked player to win the women’s title at Roland Garros since WTA rankings were introduced in 1975.
